The Entombed Miner by Tom Austen.

The remarkable story of how a trapped miner Modesto Varischetti, was rescued from a flooded mine near Coolgardie in the WA goldfields, with special coverage of the train which rushed divers and their equipment from Perth in what was then (and for many years) record time.
A minor hero of the rescue was the record-running, high-wheeled steam locomotive R174, which was saved from scrap and now spends its retirement in the Railway Museum.

Second edition, published by Shire of Coolgardie to make this well-written and researched book available again for the centenary of the rescue in 2007.

214 pages including historic black and white photos, sketches, map.

Off to War by John Dowson.

Subtitled a "Centenary commemorative souvenir", this book is not about the war, but about enlistment campaigns, the volunteers, the training, the departures, the journey there (especially from Albany and Fremantle), the hardships and the memories.

A fascinating mixture of photos with reproductions of posters, with memories recorded by those involved, honours the memories of those who served and in the process highlights the difference between official publicity and the harsh reality which the soldiers experienced, as told once the heavy wartime censorship was finally lifted.

A worthy memory of those who served.

Jinkers & Whims by Jack Bradshaw.

The timber industry was once WA's third biggest railway business, both an operator of its own railways and a major customer of the government system.
This very readable story of how Western Australia's timber industry actually worked is written by an insider - Jack Bradshaw grew up in typical saw milling communities, and his knowledge makes the workings and all the jargon easily understood.
