Fremantle Port, by John Dowson.

What makes Dowson’s books special is the superb quality of the photographs – in this case spanning the period 1870-2011. The latest book by the author of Old Fremantle and Old Albany maintains his very high standard. 198 pages, photographs and plans in monochrome and colour. Ships old and new, inside and out, the wharves, trains and tracks, workmen, passengers – illustrated and put in context with insightful text. Highly recommended.

Railway Road Bus and Truck Services of Western Australia. Written by John Young, 226 pages.

Younger transport enthusiasts possibly don't know of the extensive road operations by the Western Australian Government Railways (later Westrail) and the Midland Railway Company. Today the current TransWA passenger bus network run by the Public Transport Authority of WA is the still substantial, but vastly reduced, legacy of services that started as early as 1923.
John Young's book is a fascinating account of the start, growth and decline of the road services operated by WAGR and Midland Railway Co, and the present TransWA. The story is told through substantial quotes from WAGR archival files, annual reports and other publications, and from past employees, passengers, customers and observers.
There are sections detailing the entire road fleet both by fleet number and builder or chassis type, and a list of road service staff. Timetables, tickets, and other ephemera are well illustrated along with a huge range of photographs.
